Sciatica is pain along the nerve common form of back pain and is usually caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve from a herniated or bulging disc.
Causes
1. Sometimes, just sitting awkwardly can cause sciatica.
2. Piriformis syndrome (tightness of the piriformis muscle in the
buttock that compresses the sciatic nerve)
3. Spinal misalignment, vertebral dysfunction
4. Herniated disc
5. Poor posture – wearing high heels, prolonged sitting, poor
mattress
6. Poor lifting technique and poor bending habits
7. Spinal compression due to osteoporosis
Signs & Sympotoms
Pain areas: in the back, buttocks, hip, lower extremities, muscles, spine, or thigh
Pain types: can be chronic in the back, mild, severe, severe in the back, radiating, or sharp
Pain circumstances: can occur at night, due to injury, or while sitting
Sensory: leg numbness or pins and needles
Foot: difficulty raising the foot or numbness
Also common: burning sensation, limping, muscle weakness, or weakness
Physiotherapy Treatment
1. Spinal mobilizations
2.Massage therapy and trigger point therapy
3. Stretching tight muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments
4. Ultrasound and other electrical stimulation devices
5. Advice in relation to how to minimize pressure and irritation
of the sciatic nerve
